When can I start massaging my baby?
You can start massaging your baby when they are around six weeks old, after their umbilical cord stump has fallen off and their skin has healed.
What are the benefits of baby massage?
the short answer is baby massage has been shown to promote bonding between the parent and baby, improve sleep patterns, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance digestion and relieve colic, and improve motor development. Honestly here I could go on for a whole page!
What kind of oil should I use for baby massage?
A: You can use natural oils like fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, or rape seed oil for baby massage. Avoid using mineral oil or synthetic fragrances. Babies skin has a natural oil so you don’t need it if you would rather not use anything.
What should I do if my baby doesn't like the massage?
If your baby doesn't enjoy the massage, stop and try again another time. Don't force it. Some babies may prefer a shorter massage or a different technique. If in class you baby isn’t in the mood don’t worry there is handouts to practise at home and we go over the week before the next week. if your baby is sleeping I have spare dollies the same a mine for you to practise on.
Are there any precautions I should take while massaging my baby?
Always make sure your hands are clean and warm before massaging your baby. Avoid massaging your baby if they have a fever or any skin irritation. Don't apply too much pressure and avoid massaging the fontanelles (soft spots on the baby's head). don’t massage across joints.
